The Christmas Miracle

The Christmas Miracle

The Christmas miracle

What’s the big deal about Christmas anyway? Why do we celebrate a baby born 2000 years ago? The birth of Jesus changed history and the future for all who believe. It’s not news that a baby will become a king, it happens all the time. But it is news when a king becomes a newborn baby. It’s the Christmas miracle. And that’s what God did for us so he could show us how much he loves and cares for us.

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. (John 1:1-5, NIV,*)

The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth. (John 1:14, NIV,*)

The Christmas miracle

Jesus is a true God and he became flesh, a true man, so we could better grasp God’s love for us. And he paid the way back to God for all of us, he made it possible for us to be reconciled with God. By becoming a human being, Jesus made God more approachable and also more understandable. Hence we are able to receive all that God has for us.

God showed how much he loved us by sending his one and only Son into the world so that we might have eternal life through him. (1 John 4:9, NIV,*)

And what God has for us is love and more love. Grace and more grace. Peace and more peace. Right now, right here. All have been prepared for us by Jesus. We just need to open our hearts to receive.

We celebrate Christmas because all this was made possible because Jesus was born in Bethlehem. This is the Christmas miracle: Love broke into the world. And that love is still with us. No matter how dark it gets, the light shines and the darkness will never, ever, overcome it. So we have a lot to celebrate. Thanks be to God!

Gracious God,
We thank you for the gift of Jesus.
Open our eyes to see the true meaning of Christmas.
Don’t let us take the miracle of Christmas for granted.
Instead, help us to be in awe of your love.
Bless us this Christmas, help us to celebrate Jesus with great joy.
In Jesus’ name, we pray.
Amen
