Friday the 13th – what to do?
It’s Friday the 13th. What to do? How to go about it as a Christian? Well, I’d suggest you start your day with the Lord. Not because it’s Friday the 13th but because it is the best way to start any day. When we live our days with the Lord, we are safe and sound, even on Friday the 13th. How do I know? Well, the Bible tells us so.
The Lord is your keeper;
the Lord is your shade at your right hand.
The sun shall not strike you by day,
nor the moon by night.
The Lord will keep you from all evil;
he will keep your life.
The Lord will keep
your going out and your coming in
from this time on and forevermore.
(Psalm 121:5-8, NRSV,*)
We are protected by God Almighty, also on Friday the 13th. So it is a day of celebration for Christians. We are free of dark forces because Jesus Christ rose from death. So goodbye superstitions, you don’t have power over us.
God put this power to work in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly places, far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and above every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the age to come. (Eph. 1:20-21, NRSV, emphasis added,*)
Amazing, right? We are safe in Jesus. Hallelujah!
Friday the 13th – what to do?
So let’s not entertain superstitious thoughts. If they try to steal your peace and joy, send them to the foot of the cross. The victory over superstitions has already been won for us. So we’d better not forget the freedom we have in Christ.
See to it that no one takes you captive through philosophy and empty deceit, according to human tradition, according to the elemental spirits of the universe, and not according to Christ. For in him the whole fullness of deity dwells bodily, and you have come to fullness in him, who is the head of every ruler and authority. (Col. 2:8-10, NRSV,*)
Whenever it is Friday the 13th, celebrate the victory and freedom in Christ. Celebrate the promises of God which are always valid without exceptions. The power of God is far greater than we can imagine. And that power is also ours as his children and heir. So there are lots to celebrate. Every single day. Hallelujah!
Gracious God,
Thank you for fighting for us even before we were born.
How wonderful it is that in Jesus we have peace and protection.
We surrender to you, Lord.
How blessed we are to be called your children and heir.
Thank you for providing us everything we need.
We celebrate you and praise you forever.
In Jesus’ name,
Amen
Q4U: Is Friday the 13th a day of celebration for you or are you still crippled by superstitious thoughts? Dump them to the foot of the cross and own the victory in Christ!
Blessings to you, my dear fellow pilgrim, as you declare the victory of Christ yours now and forever!
