Life is complicated, isn’t it? When you feel you’re getting hang of it, something happens and everything changes and you’re once again trying to cope. You don’t know how long you will live either. Life sure is unpredictable. When you’re young, life seems endless but the older you get, the shorter life seems to become. What to do then? How do you handle aging? Is death something that will take away all your fun or could it be something more positive? Like a doorway to eternity?

For to me, to live is Christ [He is my source of joy, my reason to live] and to die is gain [for I will be with Him in eternity]. (Phil. 1:21, AMP)

Death as the doorway to eternity

If we view death as the doorway to eternity, everything changes. Then we don’t need to be afraid of death and aging. Instead, death is a new beginning full of promises. Death is not anymore a necessary evil but a welcome home sign.

So it does matter on which our life centers. We might think we are centered on life when we center on collecting treasures for our own benefit on earth. But that is actually the road further away from life.

“Do not store up for yourselves [material] treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. ²⁰ But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys, and where thieves do not break in and steal;²¹ for where your treasure is, there your heart [your wishes, your desires; that on which your life centers] will be also. (Matt. 6:19-21, AMP)

Death is gain

Randy Alcorn has said “He who lays up treasures on earth spends his life backing away from his treasures. To him, death is loss. He who lays up treasures in heaven looks forward to eternity; he’s moving daily toward his treasures. To him, death is gain.”

How much would it ease our fears to embrace death as the doorway to eternity? It’d help us to focus on things that last forever. Then collecting stuff would not interest us. Instead, we’d be eager to fill our lives with hope, faith, and love. We would not be afraid of death and aging. Death as the doorway to eternity will finally fully open up the reality of God to us. Then it’s not just glimpses of heaven anymore. It’s total bliss forever more.

 

Gracious God,
Thank you for reminding us to live for eternity
not just for some brief years here on earth.
Help us to live eternity in our hearts
so we could focus on what matters
and lay up treasures in heaven.
