Daily Prayer

Daily Prayer

Daily PrayerWe need prayer daily. There’s no way around it. It’s not because of God we pray. It’s because we need it. (Here are my top 10 reasons why I can’t live without prayer if you’re interested). Prayer reminds us who and whose we are, why we are here and where we are going. Daily prayer gets us focused and inspired. Prayer starts our day right: When we surrender to God, everything will work out.

Here I have a small collection of old daily prayers for you. May them encourage and equip you on your way home to heaven.

Lord, I hand over to your care, my soul and body, my prayers and my hopes, my health and my work, my life and my death, my parents and my family, my friends and my neighbours, my country and all people. Today and always.~ Lancelot Andrews (1555-1625)

O, Lord, to be turned from you is to fall, to be turned to you is to rise, and to stand in you is to abide forever. Grant us in all our duties your help, in all our perplexities your guidance, in all our dangers your protection, and in all our sorrows your peace; through Jesus Christ our Lord.~ Augustine of Hippo (354-430)

God guide me with your wisdom,
God chastise me with your justice,
God help me with your mercy,
God protect me with your strength,
God shield me with your shade,
God fill me with your grace,
For the sake of your anointed Son.
(Gaelic prayer)

My Dearest Lord,
be thou a bright flame before me;
be thou a guiding star above me,
be thou a smooth path beneath me,
be thou a kindly shepherd behind me,
today – tonight – and forever.
~ (Columba, 521-597)

God be in my head,
and in my understanding;
God be in my eyes,
and in my looking;
God be in my mouth;
and in my speaking;
God be in my heart,
and in my thinking;
God be at my end,
and at my departing.
(Book of Hours, 1864)

O my God, make me happy this day in thy service. Let me do nothing, say nothing, desire nothing, which is contrary to thy will. Give me a thankful spirit, and a heart full of praise for all that thou hast given me, and for all thou hast withheld from me. ~ (Ashton Oxenden, 1802-92)

I thank You, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, Your dear Son, that You have kept me this night from all harm and danger; and I pray that You would keep me this day also from sin and every evil, that all my doings and life may please You. For into Your hands I commend myself, my body and soul, and all things. Let Your holy angel be with me, that the evil foe may have no power over me. Amen ~ (morning prayer of Martin Luther 1483-1546)

I thank You, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, Your dear Son, that You have graciously kept me this day; and I pray that You would forgive me all my sins where I have done wrong, and graciously keep me this night. For into Your hands I commend myself, my body and soul, and all things. Let Your holy angel be with me, that the evil foe may have no power over me. Amen ~ (evening prayer of Martin Luther 1483-1546)

Good morning, God!
Thank you for this new day.
I surrender to you, Lord.
Come and be the leader of me today and always.
May only your will happen in my life.
Make me shine for you.
In Jesus’ name,
Amen

  1. I LOVE the prayers you shared here! I especially liked Martin Luther’s morning and evening prayers.

    I leave here so blessed today.

    Thank you for the gentle admonishment to not forsake times of prayer.

    Blessings,

  2. Yes, I need prayer every day too. One of my rituals is to recite Psalm 23 and the Lord’s Prayer in my head. There are always new situations that the old truths can apply to. God is so good!

    1. Yes. God is good – all the time! We are so blessed to have the Lords’ Prayer and Psalm 23 and other things to recite. They do bring peace. And the Prince of Peace. Thanks, Lisa. I love hearing your thoughts. Blessings to you!

  3. So lovely, thanks for sharing these. I tend to pray very informally, but sometimes finding a well-written prayer really helps.
