Jesus Is God

Jesus Is God

Jesus is GodHave you ever wondered how do we know that Jesus is God? The quick answer is that the Bible tells us so.

And we know that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding so that we may know him who is true; and we are in him who is true, in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life. (1 John 5:20, NRSV, emphasis added)

But there’s so much more to know. What’s most amazing to me is that the Bible gives the very same attributes to Jesus that we usually associate with God. See it yourself!

Eternal. In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. (John 1:1-2, NRSV)

Never-changing.  Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever. (Hebrews 13:8, NRSV)

Omnipresent. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age. (Matthew 28:20, NRSV)

Omnipotent. “Lord, you know everything.” (John 21:17, NRSV)

Sovereign. And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. (Matthew 28:18, NRSV)

And even that’s not all. Jesus acts and does things that we usually associate with God Almighty. Here are a few of them:

Sending the Holy Spirit. When the Advocate comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who comes from the Father, he will testify on my behalf. (John 15:26, NRSV)

Creating. All things came into being through him, and without him not one thing came into being. What has come into being. (John 1:3, NRSV)

Forgiving sins. But so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins. (Matt. 9:6, NRSV)

Judging. And he has given him authority to execute judgment, because he is the Son of Man. (John 5:27, NRSV)

And this – in my opinion – is the best reason of why Jesus is God: Jesus is to have the same honor and glory than our heavenly Father. So that all may honor the Son just as they honor the Father. Anyone who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent him. (John 5:23, NRSV)

God is a triune God (1x1x1x=1): One God, three forms (Father, Son, the Holy Spirit) just like H2O (water, ice and steam). How amazing. How wonderful. How freeing.

Jesus is God for real. And that means that Jesus was really able to carry all of our sins to the cross. He sacrificed himself for us. And because he was raised from the death on the third day, we truly can be saved by grace through faith in Jesus.

For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life. 17 “Indeed, God did not send the Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. 18 Those who believe in him are not condemned; but those who do not believe are condemned already, because they have not believed in the name of the only Son of God.  (John 3:16-18, NRSV)

Gracious God,
Thank you for your unconditional love for us.
Thank you for sending Jesus to save us.
We could not do it ourselves, it had to be you.
But it had to also be a human being,
so you sent your own Son.
Thank you for being so amazingly wonderful.
Thank you, thank you, thank you.
Save me, Lord.
I want to praise you forever and ever.
In Jesus’ precious name,
Amen

  1. What an awesome collection of Scripture declaring the TRUTH of the Trinity! Thank you for highlighting Jesus is God today 🙂 Blessed to be your #WordsWithWinter neighbor!

  2. There’s an ocean of theology just in your title today! My favorite reason for believing that Jesus is God is all the claims He made in the gospels, and I love what C.S. Lewis said about this, essentially that if His claim is not true, He is not only unqualified to be called “a good teacher,” but is also either lying or insane.
Blessings to you on this Monday!

    1. I love that CS Lewis quote. Perfect! Thanks for sharing, Michele. Yes, Jesus told us and that should be enough. But how wonderful it is to know that the whole Bible also tells us so. Always a pleasure to have a conversation with you, friend! Blessings to you!
