THE WORDS OF JESUS: A Gospel of the Sayings of Our Lord
with Reflections by Phyllis Tickle

(Jossey-Bass, 2009)

Phyllis Tickle, founding editor of the religion department at Publishers Weekly, has done qualitative analysis of the words of Jesus in the book THE WORDS OF JESUS: A Gospel of the Sayings of Our Lord with Reflections by Phyllis Tickle. She divided all the sayings from the gospels and the first chapter of Acts into five different groups: The Words of Public Teaching, The Words of Private Instruction, the Words of Healing Dialogue, The Words of Intimate Conversation and the Words of Post-Resurrection Encounters. Tickle recommends starting to read the sayings from the Private Instruction where Christ is most open and intimate with his followers.

This book provides a very unique way to be encountered by the words of Jesus without the surrounding narratives. I was intrigued to find out that Jesus talked most often of the end times. Something we often want to hush away. The author says that within six weeks into the project she began to be hit by soul-rattling epiphanies and that’s what is in store for readers, too. The reading experience is very powerful. This book will challenge you, inspire you and enlighten you if you let the words of Jesus work in you. Read it with a prayerful heart and mind and you will be surprised. I heartily recommend it to you.
