Being Called a Sinner Can Be Comforting

Last week I shared that even Mary the God-bearer needed a Savior. We all do. But I get it that being called a sinner might not sound very uplifting. It might make you feel doomed. Well, according to the Bible you are doomed without a Savior. You’d be doomed without Christmas, without Jesus coming to rescue us. But because he did, being called a sinner can be comforting. What???

In the words of Martin Luther “When Satan tells me I am a sinner he comforts me immeasurably since Christ died for sinners.” The only requirement for salvation is our need for it. Jesus came to save sinners, if you are one, you are safe in Jesus. So if Satan accuses you of being a sinner, be royally comforted, you are in safe hands.

This is a trustworthy saying, and everyone should accept it: “Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners”—and I am the worst of them all. (1 Timothy 1:15, NLT)

Sure, if you are not in Christ, being called a sinner can be scary. But the help is near. Jesus has come. Turn to him, he is welcoming all sinners with open arms. Confess your sins and you will receive grace upon grace and life upon life.

Here it is in a nutshell: Just as one person did it wrong and got us in all this trouble with sin and death, another person did it right and got us out of it. But more than just getting us out of trouble, he got us into life! One man said no to God and put many people in the wrong; one man said yes to God and put many in the right. (Romans 5:18-19, MSG)

Being called a sinner can be comforting

Jesus is our only comfort in this world, but how powerful he is. In him, we are safe no matter what. So when in Christ, Satan can accuse you as much as he wants to, but it will only bring you comfort. Jesus has won you and everyone who believes in him and there’s nothing Satan can do about it.

I did not come to call the [self-proclaimed] righteous [who see no need to repent], but sinners to repentance [to change their old way of thinking, to turn from sin and to seek God and His righteousness].” (Luke 5:32, AMP)

But remembering Jesus came to the world to save sinners, gives a deeper meaning to Christmas, don’t you think? Christmas is not just a feel-good festival. Rather it is a life-giving, liberating historical event. Nothing has been the same since the first Christmas. Now we have hope upon hope. And now being called a sinner can be comforting. Thank you, Jesus!

Gracious God,
Thank you for Jesus!
We need a Savior so badly.
Without Jesus, we are doomed.
But with him, we are blessed.
Thank you for providing us with everything we need in Jesus.
Be praised for bringing salvation for all sinners.
Help us to see the magnitude of the meaning of Christmas
and joyfully live it out every day of our lives.
In Jesus’ name,
Amen

P.S.

Isn’t Jesus amazing? Only he can rescue us from doom. But how perfectly he does it, over and over again. So do not let Satan intimidate you with his accusations. All he can do is bark, do not let it scare you away from Jesus. Instead, let it drive you closer to your Lord and Savior. And, this Christmas, celebrate heartily the birth of Immanuel, God with us! How blessed we are to have a Heavenly Father who cares for us so much that he arranged everything so we could be saved by grace and therefore united with him! Let’s live in this deep joy and share it with all we encounter! Be abundantly blessed!
