Do you ever wonder what God wants you to do? We might think God’s will must be something complicated so that’s why we don’t even try. That’s sad, isn’t it? Because then we miss our purpose as well. For a long time, I’ve been trying to figure out the simplest way to know God’s will for me. And, yes, it’s prayer, of course. But what kind of prayer, right? Let’s find out.

And then, just the other day, I came across this tweet from Jacob Taylor: “If you can learn to pray this prayer, it will change your life. It’s so simple, that you will be tempted to discount it. But the prayer is simply this, ‘God, teach me that you love me.’”

I agree with Jacob Taylor, when we truly understand – deep down in our hearts and soul – that God loves us, it does change our life. But even this prayer does not tell us what God wants us to do, does it? So we need another prayer. And that is ‘God, teach me to love you.’

Prayer…

Once we have prayed this prayer, the rest is the work of the Holy Spirit because this prayer gives God free hands to lead us to love him the way he wants to be loved. This too will change your life. For the better, for more meaning. And for more joy in the Lord.

We love because he first loved us (1 John 4:19, NIV).

Our love for Him is a response to his love for us. It’s always God first, grace first. Only then we are able to love God and our neighbors. And the blessed thing is, that when we do love God, we are known by him and he will make known his will for us.

But if anyone loves God [with awe-filled reverence, obedience and gratitude], he is known by Him [as His very own and is greatly loved]. (1 Corinthians 8:3, AMP).

How then do we love God? By obeying him, of course.

Loving God means keeping his commandments, and his commandments are not burdensome. (1 John 5:3, NLT)

But we can also express our love for God by spending time with him, enjoying his presence, listening to him, reading his Word, and daily seeking to know Him better. And when we do this, we will learn to know God’s will. He will show us how we particularly can love him. He will bring people, situations, and different kinds of opportunities for us to love and serve him.

…to know God’s will

So this prayer ‘God, show me how to love you!’ is a dangerous prayer. After praying this prayer, your life is not your own anymore because you’ve dedicated your life to loving God with all you do. But let me assure you, it will be one of the best things you ever do. Selfishness won’t bring happiness. Loving God will. So do not hesitate to pray this prayer. You will be blessed beyond belief.

Dear God,
We come to you empty-handed, thank you that is how you want us, ready to be filled with your love and grace.
So, yes, we surrender everything to you and ask, dear God, to show us how to love you.
Bless us, Lord, and use us for your glory.
Fill us with your grace and make our lives count for eternity.
In Jesus’ precious name,
Amen

P.S.

Do you want to know God’s will for your life? Then go ahead, pray these prayers. First, ask God to teach you that he loves you. And then pray to God to teach you how to love him. You will be surprised how these simple prayers will change your life. How God will change you. Dare to do this and, my dear friend, wait for good because God is good. All the time.
