Our God is quite a multi-dimensional God. And each of his dimensions has its own sub-dimensions. God is always more than we can even imagine. But his core being is Love and that’s why it is safe for us to lean on him. I’ve always loved the prayer found in the third chapter of Apostle Paul’s letter to Ephesians. It talks about the dimensions of God’s love.

I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the Lord’s holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge—that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God. (Eph. 3:14-19, NIV, emphasis added)

I love that Paul has prayed for the body of Christ to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ. This is for us too. But what could this mean? I always thought this as an invitation to and an affirmation of God’s endless love. Could it be something more? What could these dimensions of God’s love mean?

How about wide? Could it mean that God’s love completely covers us? That there’s nothing in us that it does not cover. How amazing. Also, God’s love reaches the whole wide world. Every area of the world is under God’s care.

How about long? Could it mean that God’s love lasts as long as we live? That all the generations are cover by God’s love. I think so. We have an amazing God.

How about high and deep? Could it be that God’s love is real both in our highs and lows. That nothing will scare God away. He will walk with us through thick and thin. There’s no place or experience in this life that would keep us out of God’s reach.

Yeah. That’s love. I want to be loved like that. And, blessedly, I am. And so are you too. You are the apple of God’s eye. Jesus died for you. That much he loves you. His love is wider, longer, higher and deeper than you can ever imagine. Bask in it.

Gracious God,
Thank you for loving us
with an everlasting love.
Help us to live and grow in it.
And share it with others.
