Why Does God Test Us?

Why Does God Test Us?

Take me deeper, God
Why does God test us? What do you think? The Bible is pretty clear about this. This is how Moses answered:

The Lord your God is testing you to see if you truly love him with all your heart and soul. Serve only the Lord your God and fear him alone. Obey his commands, listen to his voice, and cling to him. (Deut.13:3-4; NLT)

Kurt Bubna states in his new book Epic Grace, Chronicles of a Recovering Idiot “God will use whatever means necessary to create in us the likeness and character of his Son. He is absolutely committed to our spiritual growth. In fact, God is far more concerned with our growth than he is with out comfort.”

God wants us to grow in our faith.
God wants us to become more like Jesus.
God wants us to dig deeper into his grace.

Take me deeper, Lord!

Kurt Bubna points out the three tests in the life of Abraham as presented in Hebrews 11:

1) The test of the Unknown (or direction) as Abraham was asked to go without knowing where he was going.Who are we following? Who is giving us direction? Are we willing to go wherever God leads us? For real?

Take me deeper, Lord!

2) The test of the Unfulfilled (or dependence) as Abraham had to wait for 25 years for the promise of a heir to be fulfilled. Do we trust God to fulfill his promises? Do we give up when things don’t go smoothy? Are we willing to wait for God’s timing? Or do we take matters into our own hands?

Take me deeper, Lord!

3) The test of the Unforeseen (or devotion) as Abraham was asked to do the unthinkable (sacrifice Isaac). Is God the number one in our lives? Would we give up everything for God? Do we focus on materialistic things instead of God? Are we fully devoted to God?

Take me deeper, Lord!

This chapter of the book is truly powerful and I need to do a lot of praying over these tests myself. I want to be like Abraham who never wavered in believing God’s promises. I want to be like Abraham whose faith grew stronger in the midst of testing. I want to be like Abraham who was fully convinced that God is able to do whatever he promises.

Abraham never wavered in believing God’s promise. In fact, his faith grew stronger, and in this he brought glory to God. He was fully convinced that God is able to do whatever he promises. (Romans 4:20-21, NLT)

Gracious God,
Take me deeper!
Help me to grow strong in faith.
Empower me to always cling to you.
Enable me to wait for your timing.
Take me deeper!
In Jesus’ name,
Amen

Q4U: Have you been tested? Or are you being tested right now?

Be blessed, my fellow pilgrim, as you cling to God no matter of what!
