Perfect Is Boring

Perfect Is Boring

Perfect is boring
Sometimes I wonder why we try so hard to be perfect and blend in. Because perfect is boring. It would be very bland if we all looked alike. It would be very boring if there were not any variety. And not just that. We would also know so much less of God.

You will notice that the variety of bodies is stunning. Just as there are different kinds of seeds, there are different kinds of bodies—humans, animals, birds, fish—each unprecedented in its form. You get a hint at the diversity of resurrection glory by looking at the diversity of bodies not only on earth but in the skies—sun, moon, stars—all these varieties of beauty and brightness. And we’re only looking at pre-resurrection “seeds”—who can imagine what the resurrection “plants” will be like! (1 Cor. 15:39-41, MSG, emphasis added)

God has created us unique. Yet each of us was made into his image. Each and everyone of us reflects something special of God. Without you – just as you are – the image of God would not be complete.

God has also planned us to age here in the world. We don’t need to hide our wrinkles. Each state of life declares something different of God. Without the process of aging we would miss something of God’s plan and purpose for us.

We are called to be authentic in everything. We don’t need to try to be something we aren’t. We are loved just as we are. And God has a unique purpose and a special calling for each of us. Just as God has created us different, he also works through us in various ways and all this shows us more who God is.

God’s various gifts are handed out everywhere; but they all originate in God’s Spirit. God’s various ministries are carried out everywhere; but they all originate in God’s Spirit. God’s various expressions of power are in action everywhere; but God himself is behind it all. Each person is given something to do that shows who God is: Everyone gets in on it, everyone benefits. All kinds of things are handed out by the Spirit, and to all kinds of people! The variety is wonderful:
wise counsel
clear understanding
simple trust
healing the sick
miraculous acts
proclamation
distinguishing between spirits
tongues
interpretation of tongues.
All these gifts have a common origin, but are handed out one by one by the one Spirit of God. He decides who gets what, and when. (1 Cor. 12:4-11, MSG, emphasis added)

Perfect is the forced way of the world.
Variety is the blessed way of the Lord.
Perfect is boring; variety is wonderful.
God knows best. In him we find rest.

Gracious God,
Thank you for making all of us unique.
Enable me to see myself and the world with your eyes.
Thank your for making all of us to be part of you.
Enable us to see our gifts, our purpose, and calling.
Thank you for giving us a hint of the resurrection glory.
Enable us to celebrate you and your plan in our lives.
In Jesus’ name,
Amen

Q4U: Do you struggle with perfectionism? How have you found rest in God in this matter?

Be blessed, my fellow pilgrim, as you celebrate the great variety of God’s people!

  1. Perfect post 😉 My blog is about imperfection and self-esteem. And that is why I so appreciate this blog. We small vulnerable people are imperfect. But meet each other in Jesus and learn to accept each other as we are. Exactly the imperfections gives an extra shine. And … we are complete in Him.

  2. Ah, perfectionism… it’s a no-win goal. Who defines perfect anyway? I love the variety of God’s creation, especially in people! 🙂 But yes, I struggle with it anyway. Best solution? Get my eyes off myself and onto God! Found your blog via Thought-Provoking Thursday. 🙂

    1. Indeed perfectionism is a no-win goal. And, as you mentioned, perfection is so often defined by Madison Avenue or Hollywood. The best solution really is to lift our eyes to God’s loving eyes. Thanks for visiting, Patti. Glad to meet you! God bless you richly!
