The gift of the Holy Spirit is a gift that keeps giving every day of a believer’s life. Jesus knew what he did when he sent the Holy Spirit to us. Without God’s Spirit, we’d be powerless to follow Jesus the way are meant to. So we were gifted the Holy Spirit who transforms, inspires, and empowers us. But the Holy Spirit is not an impersonal force but a divine person of the triune God as the Bible tells us. As you can see, Jesus himself referred to the Holy Spirit as a person:
But I tell you the truth, it is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper (Comforter, Advocate, Intercessor—Counselor, Strengthener, Standby) will not come to you; but if I go, I will send Him (the Holy Spirit) to you [to be in close fellowship with you]. (John 16:7, AMP)
The Holy Spirit…
The gifts of the Holy Spirit are many, for example, wisdom, understanding, counsel, courage, knowledge, faith, fear of the Lord, and let’s not forget the fruit of the Spirit either. Many people would like to have these gifts. That’s why it is important to understand the Holy Spirit is not a thing we can manipulate to get gifts but a divine Person who works in and through our lives.
R.A. Torrey puts it this way, “If we think of the Holy Spirit only as an impersonal power or influence, then our thought will constantly be, how can I get hold of and use the Holy Spirit; but if we think of Him in the biblical way as a divine Person, infinitely wise, infinitely holy, infinitely tender, then our thought will constantly be, ‘How can the Holy Spirit get hold of and use me?’ And this changes everything, doesn’t it?
The Holy Spirit is for us but we can’t control him. And that is a blessing. Because we were not made to be gods. We are humans, He is holy. With the words of Charles Stanley “The Holy Spirit’s power cannot be harnessed. His power cannot be used to accomplish anything other than the Father’s will. He is not a candy dispenser. He is not a vending machine. He is not a genie waiting for someone to rub His lamp the right way. He is holy God.”
… is a gift that keeps giving
Thankfully, we can’t harness the Holy Spirit. We can’t spoil the Father’s will. If we want to be truly blessed, we need to let the Holy Spirit get hold of us instead. To fill us to the brim with himself and use us for God’s glory. Then we are truly blessed. Because we are nothing without God’s Spirit. But when the Holy Spirit indwells in us, we are true heirs of God Almighty.
Then, as Max Lucado points out, “You have a God who hears you, the power of love behind you, the Holy Spirit within you, and all of heaven ahead of you. If you have the Shepherd, you have grace for every sin, direction for every turn, a candle for every corner, and an anchor for every storm. You have everything you need.”
Indeed. Then we have everything we need. It might not look like it outwardly but inwardly we have everything we ever need. And that’s what counts. Eternal life starts already here with Jesus. And the Holy Spirit will guide us all the way to our Heavenly Father. We are blessed indeed.
Thank you for preparing everything for us so we could be united with you.
We are blessed indeed, the Holy Spirit is a gift that keeps giving.
So fill us to the brim with your Spirit.
Give us as much grace as we need.
Bless us the way you know is best for us.
Show us how to live the way you want us.
Guide us clearly, and empower us for your service.
In Jesus’ name,
Do you believe that the Holy Spirit is a gift that keeps giving, also in your life? If you’re not assured, ask the Holy Spirit himself to show you the truth about the matter. The Holy Spirit is how God dwells in us, and his presence is a blessing that lasts forever. Blessings to you, my fellow pilgrim, as you let the Holy Spirit take hold of you!
